Christmas Color Combos

I really liked looking at the different holiday color concepts on Hostess. They've got one that's pretty traditional, but fun.

Then, there are some non-traditional color combos that are creative and fun for a holiday party, or for decorating around the house that add a little variety.

The Polkadot Platypus

I love this website. It has everything from maternity clothes to bedding to toys. There are too many cute things on here for new or expecting mothers! I especially love that there's a section called "Playtime" that includes tutus, capes, and tiaras. Ah, the magic of childhood where all you need is a cape or a tiara, and you're someone else completely. They also carry Arbonne skincare for babies which is really really good stuff. I also loved this dapper little guy on the home page:

Advent Calendars

Advent calendars are something that bring back fond childhood memories of being able to take my turn finding the right door, and then opening it to find my chocolate inside. My grandparents are European and those cardboard advent calendars were something that was a natural part of December in our family. When we were at Ikea a couple of months ago, they had a whole display of those same advent calendars and I was so excited, I had to get one! They're similar to this:

Then, last week at Target, I found a more reusable advent "calendar" that kind of looks like this, only a little more rustic country house instead of townhouse.I love the little numbered doors! I'm excited to find something fun to put in each door (Lindt chocolate comes to mind. yum.) and I hope this will become a fun holiday tradition for our girls too. There are a lot of different versions out there I'm discovering! There's even an ultra modern one at Target online too. Not my style, but there certainly seems to be an advent calendar style for everyone these days!!

Legos even makes an advent city!

Happy Thanksgiving

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.

Brown Paper Packages Tied Up With String....

I'm loving these great package images from the Flickr group Nice Package! So creative and fun to look at!

Blocks

Katie loves blocks right now and I've been looking for a cute set as a possible Christmas present. These blocks by Alexander Girard are brilliant, but a little too pricey for my budget!

But, I really like these blocks from Dwell too, and they're a little bit more reasonably priced!

Klimt Backgrounds

Anyone who is familiar with Gustav Klimt's work knows that the background of the painting can be almost as fascinating as the main image. Ehrman Tapestries now has embroideries that focus on just that - the designs of the backgrounds by themselves. Pretty funky - check it out.

That's A Wrap!

I found the cutest Christmas wrapping paper at Target last night and it was only $1 a roll for quite a decent amount of paper, so I got all four patterns! It might seem a bit early to be wrapping gifts, but I suddenly realized the other day that if I don't get Michael's presents now, I won't be able to go shopping on my own again for quite some time after the baby's born, and then he won't get any surprises! So, I got most of his presents this week and wrapped them today while he was at work. I kept thinking of what Pam Beesley (sp?) from The Office says to Roy while I was wrapping: "If you use more than three pieces of tape when you wrap a present, you're doing something wrong." So, I present to you my three-tape-wrapped presents with the cute Target paper. Now, they just need ribbon! :) Pam would be so proud of me.

Deck the Halls

I love these simple decorating ideas for the holidays from Better Homes and Gardens.

Reading Room

I love this room from Cote De Texas. The elements all come together so nicely. I would live in this room. The furniture looks inviting, the fireplace is lovely and so are the mirror and mini trees that set off the mantel. I also love the wall color, the built-in bookshelves, and the placement of the pictures on the wall. Very pleasing to the eye. This room just begs you to come in and sit a while and peruse some delightful books. (note the stacks of books on the side table by the wall!) And as an added little bonus, the flowers in the front are so pretty!

Garden Spells

Just finished this book by Sarah Addison Allen and I loved it. It was so good and I kept thinking what a great movie it would make. Kind of a Practical Magic feel, only not quite so dark...only a little dark. Mostly just lovely characters and a dash of delightful magic! Really well-written too, which is a must for me. I can't stand writing that thinks it's being so clever and it's really just being blase. This was great and had me hooked right in. Very impressive for a first novel too!

Sally Coat

I lalalalove this coat from Urban Outfitters! Especially the collar. This would look so nice with absolutely any outfit this winter!

Blog Love

I've been reading about the blog My Marrakesh so much lately. It is amazing!! It's written by a woman who is living in Morocco with her family and she writes about their adventures. She also takes the most amazing photographs. My Marrakesh is not only interesting to read, but is so visually stimulating! I love the vivid colors and fascinating scenery. This is a new favorite read for me and I'm glad so many people talked it up so I could discover it! Make sure you follow the link on her blog to her Flickr photos too; they're delicious and have such an exotic and other-worldly feel to them.

Marisa Holmes

I love the photography of Marisa Holmes. She does mostly wedding photography and all of her images are stunning. You can check out her blog here. Looking at these makes me want to buy an expensive camera and go in search of perfect lighting to snap lots of photos of everything!

Charlie Motel

I love the sweet prints from the Charlie Motel Etsy shop. This one reminds me of Jilly and me! Make sure and check out the other fun things!

Harmony

You don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note.

The Mom List

My friend Jenni is expecting her first baby, and asked for advice on useful baby products to get. I had so many, I decided to post them here in case anyone else was interested (plus this would have made for a ridiculously long comment on her blog!) I'm by no means an expert on this kind of stuff, and everyone is different in what they find useful, but these are things that I either loved with Katie my first time around, or wish I had used and am trying the second time around with Olivia. (A few were already mentioned to you Jenn, but I thought they were worth mentioning again here!)

First of all, there were a couple of things that I found very useful in the hospital the first time around that I would highly recommend for you as the mother.

1. Depends. You might laugh or feel dumb buying them, let alone using them, but I am telling you now, I LOVED these for after Katie was born. You may feel a bit like Homer Simpson, but they sure as heck beat what they give you in the hospital! I was so much more comfortable in these that I didn't care that I was putting diapers on myself as well as the baby!

2. Anyone who knows me knows that my first labor & delivery experience was far from ideal and I still hate the hospital I went to. But, in my mind, they did do one thing right (and pretty much one thing only!) They gave me ice packs that were actually baby diapers with crushed ice inside the lining. I don't know if all hospitals do this, but it was the perfect ice pack because it was absorbent and had enough padding that the ice wasn't right on your skin. The nurse showed us how they did it and it was fairly simple - just gently separate the lining from the diaper at the back of the diaper to create an opening to the inside and fill with ice. I continued to do this after I came home. Separating the lining doesn't work with all diapers though...I'm thinking they used Pampers? Anyway, it was genius.

3. Bring a pacifier to the hospital just in case. Some hospitals provide them I guess, but mine didn't and a pacifier would have been nice since there was also no nursery and I had the baby all day and all night. Make sure it's the right size (0-6 months) too so that their little mouth can handle it. I don't care what they say about "nipple confusion," after I got Katie a pacifier, my nights (and days!) were soooo much better.

Okay, the rest are just your basic baby products!

4. Butt Paste - funny name, great stuff!

5. Dye-free gas relief drops. You may not need them, but if your baby has trouble with gas after eating, these are great to calm them down. I had some with Katie, but it was bright pink and stained her clothes, so make sure it's dye free!

6. While we're talking about stains, which are inevitable with babies, Oxi Clean Baby Stain Soaker got most of the stains out of Katie's clothes...even the really tough ones.

7. The Boppy pillow, or some kind of nursing pillow. (If you're planning to nurse) This saved my arms from total exhaustion, and it serves some other handy purposes too!

8. A sling. I have a Baby Bjorn, but it works better for babies that are a little bit older. I wish I would have had a sling where a newborn baby can be cradled close to you while still freeing up your arms to do things. I'm getting one this time!

9. Again, if you're planning on nursing, a nursing cover. I used blankets with Katie, but they did not offer great coverage, I was constantly worrying about adjusting them, plus they made me and the baby too hot!!

10. A good diaper pail. This saves you from the smell, or having to run outside to throw each diaper away! I have used the Diaper Genie and it works just fine for me, but I don't absolutely love it when it comes to emptying it. Maybe there's a better one out there I haven't tried??

11. Mesh laundry bag for all the little socks and other miscellaneous tiny things that need to be washed, but not lost!

12. The best burp cloths I found were the cloth diapers. They're thicker than most burp cloths and absorb much better.

13. Lots of water bottles! (Especially if you nurse) I bought a huge flat of them so I could just grab one and run.

Poppytalk Handmade

For the month of November, there is a great online "street market" full of beautiful hand-made things. It's so much fun to browse and there are so many great creators in one place! Check out Poppytalk Handmade here.

Cuteness

This Christmas print from belle and boo is too adorable!!

Laugh, Dream, Love Poster

I love this screen-printed poster from Orange Beautiful's Etsy shop. It would be so cute framed in the girl's room! I think it fits especially well for two little girlies.

The Next Great M&M's!

I'm loving the new featurette dear m+m over on Marta's blog. What a great idea - and such a fun read too! (as always) It's always nice to know there are people out there to support and cheer you on; and blog-friends make great friends I am finding!

Emma van Leest

I was just introduced to the work of Emma van Leest through style court's blog. Her work is amazing!!! I am in awe. I never knew scissors could be put to such artistic use. Here are just a few examples of her work to get lost in. They are seriously so much fun to gaze at and take in all the details. She has her own blog here.

Let's Say Thanks

Xerox is doing something awesome for our troops. If you go to this website you can pick a card to say thank you, include a brief message, and they will send it to one of our men or women serving in the military. It's free, fast, and I think especially needed at this time of year. Last year, my husband had to be in the Middle East for the holidays and the only thing that made him feel better on what was otherwise a pretty hard Christmas Day was a thank you letter from a 9 year old girl named Allison from South Dakota. When he wrote to me about how her letter cheered him up, it made me cry and I was so grateful that little girl took the time to say thanks. Let's try and get everyone to do this!! A small thank you goes a long way and they need our support no matter what your views on the war are!

Paul Potts

This album is on my wish list for Christmas for sure. When I saw the clip of his performance on Britain's Got Talent, I was in tears. I love to watch it again just to see the skeptical looks on the judge's faces when he says he's going to sing opera, and then watch as he rocks it and surprises everyone. If you haven't seen it yet, you can watch it here. He's such a humble, cute guy and his voice is amazing. It touches me that an ordinary person can have extraordinary gifts and can make their dreams come true.

Project:Organization!

Back in June, Caroline over at Armelle posted about baby closet organizers. I LOVE this cute idea and since I'm in my organization mode, I'm going to do this. I can especially use this now that I'm going to have two little one's clothes to keep track of!

Bianca Merkley

I'm so excited that this CD is finally out and available for purchase! You can listen to samples and buy the album here.

Whistle While You Work

Today is major cleaning and organizing day at my house! I guess that "nesting instinct" is telling me the baby is coming soon and I need to get it together!

Katie's Day

Katie's birthday was so much fun. (This is the last post about it, I promise!) She was so excited about her presents and even helped rip them open. She was a darling little birthday girl. I wore myself out decorating the house and making her cake. (A special thank you goes out to Loretta and Mindy for helping me out with cake supplies!) We didn't have a big party - it was just the three of us- but it was a lot of fun. Here are a few pics from her special day.

History Repeats Itself

I was looking through my baby journal and found this picture from my first birthday holding up my fingers for one year old, and on Saturday, we got a picture of Katie holding up her finger to say she's one! Too fun.

One Year

One year ago today, Katherine Grace made her appearance and changed my life forever. I'll never forget the moment they handed her to me and I saw her tiny face for the first time. It was such a sweet experience, and it has been sweet ever since. This past year has gone by so quickly! Everyone tells you how fast children grow, but you don't really know what that means until you have your own. Thank you for making my life so much sweeter my little Katie bug. You are a pure delight and I love you more than I can adequately express.

Thanksgiving Article

Well, my second article for Baby Creation Boutique was put up today online. You can check it out here if you want. I'm still working on having the misspellings at the top fixed....and I think from now on I will be writing my own titles for my articles! It is fun to see your name in print though (when it's spelled right!), and it even has a little picture of me to go with it - I feel like a real writer! Too fun. It looks like they will be starting a blog soon too, which should be fun to check out.

Playful Chef

I love this Playful Chef Kids' Cooking Kit that I first saw on Tangled and True from The Chocolate Cake Club. It's so cute!! This would be such a fun thing to have for the girls when they get old enough to "help" in the kitchen! That day will probably come sooner than I think - Katie already loves to "help" me with the laundry by pulling everything I put in the dryer out again. ;)

This Time Last Year

On this day last year, my water had just broken, and I was officially in labor! I can't believe it's already been one year. (and I REALLY can't believe that I'm about to have another baby girl in a month!) Life is surely unexpected. Tomorrow, I will be remembering what it felt like to look into the eyes of my daughter for the first time, and I will be celebrating her very first birthday with all the trimmings. These are moments to remember. And I am really remembering one year ago and all the feelings that came with it!

Oh my!

Only 30 days left until the "official" due date. I'm so ready to be done being pregnant, but I'm suddenly not feeling prepared! Ahhhh! I better get it together in the next 30 days huh?

Today I'm Listening To

Sara Bareilles' new album, Little Voice. I especially like the first track Love Song. It's super fun to listen to! She writes all of her own songs and I am especially inspired by people that do that.

Uppercase

My friend gave me a catalog for Uppercase Living a while back and I love the ideas they have for these wall adhesives. It's nice to be able to put something up without pounding nails into your wall. The only downside is you can't take them with you because you can only use them once. So, I'll have to wait until I have a home of my own!
